The Green Light for the Biggest BESS in the Netherlands

2025-01-02
Netherlands’ largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Dordrecht 45MW/90MWh, sets new records and powering 21,500 homes daily with clean energy.

Dispatch Grid Services, a promising Amsterdam-based company spearheading battery storage solutions, has begun construction on the highly-anticipated Dordrecht 45MW/90MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This feat overtakes the 30MW/68MWh project called Pollux by SemperPower, setting a new record for the largest stand-alone BESS in the Netherlands.

A Grand Alliance Forges Ahead

The construction of this dynamic battery energy storage project is made possible through a strategic consortium that comprises Dispatch Grid Services, Epico2 infrastructure fund, Macquarie Capital, and funding heavyweight ABN AMRO. Dordrecht is considered a stellar first step in an ongoing collaboration between Dispatch and Macquarie Capital. This partnership aspires to pioneer up to 3GWh of BESS projects throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany in the coming seven years.

"Comprehensive energy storage is the missing piece of our energy transition puzzle," remarked Eiso Vaandrager, CEO and co-founder of Dispatch. "By 2030, the Netherlands must roll out at least 9GW of battery energy storage to secure Europe’s balanced energy grid."

Revolutionizing Energy Capacity with Advanced Technology

The sophisticated BESS consists of 144 cutting-edge lithium-ion sealed cells -known as Fluence cubes - boasting a formidable capacity of 90MWh. In relative terms, this battery can store power sufficient to fulfill the energy demand of approximately 21,500 homes each day.

Speaking on Fluence's commendable track record in the Netherlands, Paul McCusker, SVP and president EMEA at Fluence, a Siemens and AES company, said, “Fluence has been fundamental to deploying the country’s first-ever utility-scale battery storage system, and our commitment to investing in our Dutch presence remains robust. We consider the Netherlands a pivotal component of Fluence’s future growth trajectory, with the demand for energy storage solutions skyrocketing.”

Engineering Excellence and Local Optimization

Conducting the engineering and construction of the BESS is the multinational company, Equans Netherlands. Dutch energy player, Eneco, is tasked with tweaking the battery for optimal performance, enabling it to maintain the grid's balance without escalating local congestion.
