The MACSE auction in Italy is poised to bring about a complete overhaul of the country's energy storage scenario according to a report from Aurora Energy Research. By 2030, the plan is set to reinvent the way energy is stored in Italy.
The target of this initiative is to bolster the deployment of power storage facilities needed to fulfill Italy's ambitious renewable energy target of 131GW by the end of 2030. It is anticipated that the inaugural auctions for the generation of new energy storage capacity will occur around the second quarter of 2025.
To be in line with the goals outlined in the EU's 'Fit for 55' package, close to 72GWh of storage ability will have to be established by 2030. Out of this, the MACSE initiative will support the creation of 50GWh of new, large-scale energy storage systems. The research further highlights that for the MACSE's reliability standards to be met for the duration of their lifespan, projects will need to be upsized by nearly 18%
In the words of Maddalena Cerreto, a senior research associate at Aurora, the aggressive aim of powering 50GWh of new large-scale energy storage systems by 2030 places Italy in an advantageous position for investors. Given the predicted prevalence of renewable energy, the investment prospects are extremely enticing.
She went on to mention that Aurora predicts a remarkable rise in volatility in Italy's market prices in the upcoming years, thanks to the exponential growth of renewable energy systems.
