Sunstone Solar, the largest proposed solar and energy storage project in the United States, has officially received the final approval from the Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC). This approval marks a major milestone for Pine Gate Renewables, the project owner, allowing them to proceed with the development of their massive 1200 MW solar and energy storage project in Oregon. With this green light, the project is set to advance clean energy initiatives in the state, reinforcing Oregon’s role in the clean energy sector.
In an endeavour to counterbalance the impact of the project on the local agricultural economy, Pine Gate has diligently collaborated with Morrow County and regional agricultural bodies. The resultant program, a pioneer in its domain, promises to inject more than a thousand dollars per acre of the project into a County-controlled fund. This fund is earmarked to enhance the local agricultural economy, bolstering the sustainability and resilience of Morrow County's wheat farms, and ensuring the region’s resilience alongside renewable energy development.
Negotiations are ongoing between Pine Gate, customers and local utilities concerning the procurement of electricity and the environmental footprint of energy churned out by the project. The project, set to be interconnected to the Bonneville Power Administration via the Umatilla Electric Cooperative system, will kick-start the engineering and procurement procedures early in 2025 with construction following in phases from 2026. The ongoing collaboration demonstrates the importance of balancing solar energy development with environmental concerns.
"Oregon's protocol for energy facility sanctioning is among the strictest countrywide," according to Ben Catt, the CEO of Pine Gate Renewables. "The recent unanimous endorsement speaks volumes about our team's effort to deliver a favourable outcome for both Oregon and the Morrow County community."
Playing a pivotal role in the battle against climate change, US Senator Ron Wyden hails the Sunstone Solar power and energy storage project as among the vital energy solutions required. Adding to the legacy of federal investments he advocated for in the Inflation Reduction Act, Wyden continues to push for technology-neutral tax solutions to spur innovation and efficiency in Oregon and the entire nation.
As a lifetime resident of Morrow County, Ken Grieb, a local wheat farmer and landowner, anticipates the economic opportunities Sunstone Solar will bring to the local community. He praised Pine Gate for illustrating how large-scale energy facility development can be undertaken with consideration and collaboration. This approach illustrates how large-scale solar energy projects can provide economic opportunities while minimizing negative impacts on local industries like farming.
In addition to these ventures, Pine Gate owns and operates 17 more solar projects in Oregon. The company took over the Sunstone Solar project from Gallatin Power Partners in 2022, solidifying its position as a leader in solar energy development.
