Households are increasingly utilizing home energy storage systems to optimize self-consumption and decrease grid reliance, playing a substantial role in the national expansion of storage capacity.
A recent analysis suggests that the total installed capacity may reach 2.9 GWh by the end of the year, representing an increase of approximately 115% compared to 2024. This development signifies a notable progression for the Dutch energy market, which is swiftly integrating distributed energy storage solutions.
Approximately 1.55 GWh of new capacity is anticipated for the current year. This is projected to comprise about 860 MWh from the residential segment, 330 MWh from commercial and industrial applications, and 360 MWh from utility-scale deployments. These figures underscore the increasing influence of combined solar and storage adoption within the country's energy landscape.
Forecasts point toward continued growth acceleration. In 2026, capacity additions are projected to reach 1.7 GWh in the residential sector, 650 MWh for commercial and industrial sites, and 550 MWh for utility-scale installations. By 2027, projections rise further to 4.5 GWh, 1.4 GWh, and 1.1 GWh, respectively. These trends reflect strong momentum behind the expansion of household battery capacity, supported by the ongoing evolution of energy transition policies.
