Enzinc Inc., a leader in advanced zinc battery technology, has launched a state-of-the-art Manufacturing Technology Center in Oakland, California. This new facility represents a significant step forward in meeting the increasing demand for advanced battery components. Enzinc’s innovative zinc-based battery solutions are designed for both mobile and stationary energy storage, offering fire-resistant and robust alternatives to traditional batteries. The expansive 10,000-square-foot facility will serve as the hub for fabricating these critical battery components.
The opening ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including:
Their presence underscored the significance of this new facility in shaping the future of clean energy and energy storage.
The establishment of the Manufacturing Technology Center highlights successful public-private partnerships aimed at enhancing energy resilience and creating high-quality jobs in the U.S. Enzinc’s CEO and co-founder, Michael Burz, emphasized the company’s journey, which began with foundational research by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and was supported by federal and state grants, alongside strong backing from investors.
"As electrification gains momentum across buildings, transportation, and the grid, the need for better battery solutions grows. Enzinc is leading this transformation with safer, adaptable, and cost-effective battery technology," said Burz.
Enzinc’s Oakland-based facility will focus on scaling and automating the production of its revolutionary zinc anodes. The company’s proprietary technology enables traditional lead-acid battery manufacturers to shift toward more sustainable nickel-zinc batteries with minimal capital investment. This advancement not only boosts battery performance but also aligns with sustainability goals.
Jon Bonanno, founder of Factor and a senior advisor to Enzinc, highlighted California’s innovation ecosystem as a crucial factor in the company’s success. He noted that Enzinc’s ability to leverage grants from programs like the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E and the California Energy Commission’s Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) played a significant role in bringing this technology to market.
Enzinc’s pioneering zinc microsponge technology has overcome the historical challenges associated with using zinc in rechargeable batteries. This technology was recently recognized by NRL as one of the “25 Technologies for the Next 25 Years.” Batteries incorporating Enzinc Inside deliver performance comparable to lithium-ion batteries at a cost similar to lead-acid batteries—without the fire risks, HVAC requirements, or narrow operating temperature limits.
By pushing the boundaries of energy storage potential, Enzinc is also contributing to the local economy by creating engineering and manufacturing jobs.
A pivotal $1.8 million grant from the EPIC BRIDGE program (Bringing Rapid Innovation Development to Green Energy) played a key role in launching the Manufacturing Technology Center. Enzinc’s continued expansion is poised to make a significant impact on the energy storage industry, offering scalable, sustainable solutions in a world increasingly dependent on electrification.
