Australian Rooftop Solar Reaches Record Output of 4,407 MW in Q4 2025

Australia rooftop solar hit record 4,407 MW in Q4 2025, cutting prices, boosting batteries and pushing renewables to 51% of NEM generation.

Rooftop solar generation in Australia reached an all-time high of 4,407 MW in the fourth quarter of 2025, representing an 8.7% increase compared with the same period in 2024. The growth reduced daytime operational demand, supported battery charging, and contributed to renewable energy supplying 51% of total electricity generation in the NEM.

Distributed solar output increased by 353 MW year on year during the quarter, averaging nearly 30 MW more than grid-scale solar. Large-scale solar also achieved strong performance, setting a new quarterly output record of 2,535 MW.

Several exceptional peaks were recorded. Distributed solar reached a half-hourly output of 16,319 MW in early December, surpassing the previous record by nearly 9%. Grid-scale solar also achieved a new half-hourly peak of 8,148 MW in late November.

The increasing penetration of rooftop solar, combined with wind and battery storage, has reduced reliance on coal and gas generation. Wholesale electricity prices averaged approximately AUD 50 per megawatt-hour during the quarter, representing a sharp decline compared with both the previous year and earlier in 2025.

Western Australia also recorded continued growth in distributed solar capacity, reflecting strong nationwide adoption of rooftop solar systems.
