French agri-PV specialist Sun'Agri has shared the results of the 2024 harvest from two agri-PV test sites in the south of France. Three grape varieties were tested in the Domaine de nidol<e:1> appellation in the Eastern Pyrenees.
The results showed that grape yields under solar panels were between 20% and 60% higher than at sites without PV. The Chardonnay variety showed the highest increase, at 60 percent, followed by Marselan (30 percent) and Grenache blanc (20 percent).
In the second trial in Vaucluse, south-east France, yield increases remained above 30% with or without irrigation.
Sun'Agri attributes these increases to the ability of the agri-PV system to optimize microclimate, regulate temperature, increase humidity and reduce irrigation needs by 20 to 70 percent.
It also helps prevent frost and a 2-degree Celsius drop in temperature, the company said. As a result, plant survival has improved and plant mortality has been reduced by 25 to 50 percent.
In addition, grapes grown under the panels produced wines with 1.5 percent less alcohol, retained the acidity of white wines and improved their aromas.
