UK Solar Market Adds 2.6 GW in 2025, Marking a Record Year for Rooftop Solar

2026-02-14
UK solar rebounded in 2025, reaching 21.6 GW as utility-scale and rooftop growth accelerated, boosting energy resilience and progress toward 2030 targets.

The UK solar market experienced a strong resurgence in 2025, with deployment levels returning to heights not seen in nearly a decade. Total installed solar capacity expanded by 13.6% over the year, reflecting renewed momentum across both utility-scale solar projects and rooftop solar installations.

By the end of 2025, cumulative UK solar capacity reached approximately 21.6 GW, according to official data. Of the 2.6 GW of new capacity installed during the year, large-scale solar plants accounted for the majority. However, a notable acceleration was also observed in small-scale solar installations under 50 kW, signaling a record-breaking year for rooftop solar deployment.

Small-scale solar growth was supported by certification requirements that enable access to government-backed export mechanisms and incentive schemes. These installations, primarily serving households and small businesses, played an increasingly important role in decentralizing electricity generation and enhancing local energy resilience.

Utility-scale solar also set new milestones during the year. Several large projects entered operation, including facilities exceeding previous national capacity records. In addition, a growing number of projects above 100 MW received planning approval as nationally significant infrastructure, indicating a strong pipeline for future expansion.

The increase in annual solar additions aligns with ongoing procurement of large-scale renewable capacity through competitive auction mechanisms. Upcoming allocation rounds will need to secure substantial solar capacity if long-term national targets—set at 45 GW of solar by 2030—are to remain achievable.

Rooftop solar capacity is expected to continue expanding, supported by policy initiatives such as grants, subsidies, and financing mechanisms aimed at households. New building standards planned for introduction in England from 2026 are also expected to make rooftop solar a standard feature on new residential developments, reinforcing long-term growth in the UK solar market.
