A recent nationwide survey reveals that the majority of U.S. residents support battery storage projects, especially when these systems deliver reliable power, lower electricity bills, and boost local economies. At the same time, the findings highlight that renewable energy growth and grid reliability improvements must be paired with clear safety measures and better public education.
The survey, conducted among nearly 4,000 participants, found that seven out of ten Americans would support a battery storage project operating or proposed in their community. While overall support is strong, the motivations vary: some regions prioritize reliable power, others focus on lower energy costs, and some see value in job creation and economic growth linked to renewable energy deployment.
This diversity in priorities shows how battery energy storage systems (BESS) are viewed not only as a technical solution for the grid but also as a practical way to benefit everyday life in communities across the country.
Despite strong approval rates, the survey identified a significant knowledge gap. Nearly half of respondents said they had not encountered any information about battery storage technology. Among those opposed to local projects, a majority reported having no prior understanding of how BESS works or what benefits it could bring.
This gap indicates a missed opportunity: better communication about how battery storage supports renewable energy, stabilizes the grid, and provides backup power could convert uncertainty into support.
Reasons for opposition differ by region. In some states, concerns center on environmental impacts; in others, property values or fears about potential leaks are the leading issues. These findings underscore the importance of tailoring community engagement to local concerns and ensuring transparent, data-driven discussions around safety, reliability, and economic impact.
Safety emerged as a key factor in shifting perceptions. Two-thirds of Americans said they would be more likely to support a battery storage project if it included advanced fire suppression systems capable of quickly containing incidents. Even among those initially opposed, nearly one-third said they would reconsider their stance if strong fire protection measures were in place. Proactively addressing fire safety may therefore be one of the most effective ways to increase public confidence in renewable energy infrastructure.
