November Onshore Wind Auction: Average Strike Price Falls to 6.06 ct/kWh

2026-01-28
Germany’s latest onshore wind auction delivered record bids, falling prices, and clear momentum toward 2030 renewable targets and strong investor confidence.

The federal energy regulator has released results from the onshore wind energy auction held on November 1, 2025. The auction received over 8 gigawatts of bids, marking the highest participation level to date. The weighted average strike price for awarded projects fell to 6.06 cents per kilowatt-hour, continuing a downward trend from previous rounds.

High Participation Across Germany

For the 3,450 MW of capacity available, 905 bids totaling 8,155 MW were submitted. Of these, 415 bids representing 3,456 MW were approved. Thirty-seven bids were excluded from the process. The resulting strike prices ranged between 5.80 and 6.12 ct/kWh.

The majority of successful projects were located in North Rhine-Westphalia (1,093 MW, 148 awards), followed by Lower Saxony (1,091 MW, 133 awards) and Brandenburg (262 MW, 34 awards).

Outlook for 2026

With more than 14,445 MW of projects already awarded in 2025, onshore wind continues to follow the deployment path outlined in national renewable energy policies. The regulator has increased the auction volume for February 2026 to 3,445 MW, bringing the total planned auction volume for the year to 10,945 MW. With a substantial pipeline of approved but not yet awarded projects, future auctions are expected to remain oversubscribed.

Energy industry associations emphasize that maintaining policy certainty and avoiding sudden system changes in regulatory frameworks is essential for achieving the 2030 expansion targets. Gradual reforms with clear rules for market participants are recommended to ensure continued investment confidence and consistent growth of the onshore wind sector.
