Germany's Solar Power Production Soars by 20% in July 2024

2024-09-26

Germany continues to showcase its leadership in renewable energy, with solar power making remarkable gains. According to the Working Group for Renewable Energy Statistics (AGEE-Stat) at the Federal Environment Agency, the country generated 10.1 terawatt-hours (TWh) of solar power in July 2024—marking a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Solar Power Growth Reaches New Heights in 2024

From January to July 2024, Germany produced a total of 45.5 TWh of solar energy, reflecting a 14% year-on-year growth. The nation saw a net extension of 9.4 gigawatts (GW) in photovoltaic (PV) capacity, bringing the total installed PV capacity to 91.6 GW by the end of July. Interestingly, late registrations added an extra 1.432 GW to the monthly tally, surpassing initial mid-month reports from the Federal Network Agency.

Onshore Wind Energy Takes a Steady Leap

In 2024, onshore wind energy also made incremental progress, generating 66.4 TWh, which represents a modest 3% increase compared to the same period in 2023. A net addition of 1.1 GW brought the total installed capacity to 62.1 GW. While growth in onshore wind was slower than in solar, the steady expansion contributes to Germany's broader renewable energy goals.

Offshore Wind Power Continues to Thrive

Offshore wind energy also saw an impressive rise, generating 15.7 TWh in 2024, marking an 18% jump. The total offshore wind capacity increased by 0.5 GW, reaching 9 GW by the end of July, further solidifying Germany’s offshore wind potential.

Biomass and Hydropower Hold Steady

Biomass energy, while still an essential part of Germany’s renewable portfolio, saw a slight decline of 1%, generating 25.4 TWh. Nevertheless, capacity increased by 73 MW, pushing the total to 9.6 GW.

In contrast, hydropower benefited from higher rainfall, leading to an 18% boost in energy production, reaching 13.4 TWh. Although no specific data on new hydropower capacity was provided, this surge underscores the importance of weather patterns in renewable energy generation.

Germany’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

The continued rise in solar, wind, and hydropower generation throughout 2024 demonstrates Germany's steadfast commitment to renewable energy. The progress achieved aligns with the country's long-term environmental goals, further solidifying its position as a leader in the global energy transition.
