Germany's Power Generation: Renewables Contribute 59.4 Percent

2025-05-27
Germany achieved a renewable energy milestone in 2024, with 59.4% of its electricity generated from sustainable sources. Wind and solar power led the charge, while overall power production declined amid rising imports and lower industrial demand.

In 2024, renewable energy sources delivered a staggering 59.4 percent of Germany's overall power output. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), production of energy from sustainable sources grew by 2.3 percent from the prior year, reaching a record 256.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh). In comparison, the proportion of power derived from renewable sources in 2023 was 56.0 percent. Conversely, traditional energy generation dwindled by 11.0 percent, contributing 175.1 billion kWh or 40.6 percent of domestically generated electricity.

Wind Energy: Still the Most Significant Source of Power

Wind power production marginally declined by 1.4 percent to 136.0 billion kWh in 2024. However, it still accounted for a greater share of electricity generation, climbing from 30.8 percent in 2023 to 31.5 percent in 2024, hence retaining its position as the predominant energy source in the domestic power landscape.

Solar Power and Its Share: 14 Percent

Solar power injection into the grid witnessed a surge in 2024, growing by 10.4 percent to 59.5 billion kWh. This equaled 13.8 percent of the total domestic electricity production – a new high. Hydroelectric power injection also recorded a rise of 10.3 percent, amounting to 20.4 billion kWh, and hence contributing 4.7 percent of overall power generation.

In totality, Germany's power generation fell by 3.6 percent in 2024, amounting to 431.5 billion kWh, which was synced into the grid. Reasons for the decline primarily included a lower demand for electricity due to a downturn in the manufacturing sector production and escalating power imports from foreign countries.

The Federal Environment Agency reported data on electricity consumption a few days ago, highlighting that renewable energy contributed 56.4 percent of the total. This statistic contrastingly reflects an account of both domestically generated power and surplus power imported from abroad, which had tripled compared to 2023. The imported volumes had a higher proportion of conventional power.
