Contributing to the Women's Energy Project

2024-06-06

The Victorian Government has announced an additional $1.3 million for organizations under the Women in Energy and Manufacturing grant program, which aims to help organizations recruit, hire, and retain women while removing barriers in these traditionally male-dominated sectors.

Victoria's Minister for Women, Natalie Hutchins, announced that applications are now open for the new round of grants designed to promote equality in the workplace and help more women enter and succeed in the energy and manufacturing industries.

Several initiatives were supported in the first round, including mentoring programs for women run by the National Association of Women in Operations, which offered virtual groups and one-to-one sessions, and solar energy careers information campaigns in schools run by Australian Women in Solar Energy.

The government also supported the Australian Manufacturing Union's Women in Trades project, which organized a series of demonstration events, factory tours, and career fairs with employers such as Nestle to attract young women to exciting careers in the manufacturing sector.

The Government stated that encouraging more women to aspire to and excel in careers in the energy and manufacturing sectors will not only help address the gender imbalance but also tackle the skills shortages in these sectors.

In Victoria's manufacturing sector, only 32 percent of employees are women, compared to 33 percent in electricity, gas, water, and waste management. In the skilled trades, the figures are even lower.

The program is an important part of the Government's response to the Victorian Women's Economic Equality Inquiry. The application deadline for this round of scholarships is February 20, 2024.

“We want women of all ages, backgrounds, and identities to be able to pursue the careers they want, and that's why programs like this are so important,” Ms. Hutchins said. “Attracting, recruiting, and retaining more women in Victoria's energy and manufacturing industries will also help these sectors grow and thrive in a time of rapid change. I encourage all organizations that want to help more women get the jobs they want in these traditionally male-dominated industries to apply.”
