Pathward, N.A. has solidified its position in the renewable energy sector by securing a significant $146.5 million construction loan aimed at financing six battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Cameron County, Texas. In addition, the North American Development Bank (NADBank) has contributed $73.25 million to bolster these projects, aiming to strengthen Texas's energy grid.
As reported by project sponsors, these BESS projects are set to deliver a total capacity of 154 megawatt-hours, enhancing Texas’s grid energy storage capability by 2025. The battery storage systems are projected to generate approximately 54,925 MWh of electricity annually, enough to power nearly 4,000 U.S. homes.
These BESS projects will play a vital role in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market, offering grid-stabilizing services by dynamically charging and discharging electricity as needed. Such rapid response capabilities are crucial for renewable energy integration, enabling the grid to maintain stability and handle peak demand effectively.
Pathward recently expanded its partnership by securing $72.35 million in construction loans for BESS projects in Bexar County, Texas, marking another significant step in its renewable energy initiatives. Christopher Soupal, Divisional President of Pathward’s Commercial Finance line, emphasizes the importance of battery storage in promoting sustainability.
John Beckham, NADBank’s Managing Director, notes, “By supporting a more reliable Texas power grid, we aim to reduce interruptions and energy loss, contributing to a greener economy.” This initiative reflects the sustainable energy transition efforts across the state.
With a strong focus on renewable energy and battery storage, Pathward has facilitated over $2.14 billion in financing for clean energy projects since 2018, driving rural economic growth and industry innovation.
