Battery Storage Capacity in Germany Quintuples Within Five Years

Germany’s battery storage boom is reshaping the energy system, with rapid capacity growth, rising large-scale projects, and a clear path to a renewable grid.

Germany has seen a rapid expansion of battery storage capacity, with installed stationary storage systems increasing more than fivefold over the past five years. Around 2.4 million battery systems are now in operation nationwide, most of them combined with photovoltaic installations.


Together, these systems provide more than 25 gigawatt-hours of total storage capacity—sufficient to cover the average daily electricity consumption of over three million two-person households. Energy storage market growth is therefore becoming a central pillar of the renewable energy system.


Despite this progress, further acceleration will be required. To support a largely renewable-based electricity supply, installed battery capacity would need to reach approximately 100 gigawatt-hours by 2030, implying a significant increase in annual deployment rates.


2025 Market Trends: Large-Scale Storage Gains Momentum


In 2025, nearly 600,000 new stationary battery systems were commissioned, adding around 6.5 gigawatt-hours of capacity. This represents a year-on-year capacity increase of roughly five percent.

While demand for residential battery storage declined slightly, installations of large-scale battery storage systems expanded rapidly, more than doubling compared with the previous year. Commercial storage solutions also recorded solid growth, with capacity additions rising by around 30 percent.


Looking ahead to 2026, further expansion is expected, particularly in the utility-scale segment. Investment activity in residential systems will largely depend on future regulatory developments related to solar power and heat pump integration.


Enabling Storage to Support the Energy System


To unlock the full potential of battery storage, grid connection procedures need to be streamlined and network fee structures should incentivize system-supportive operation. Digitalized processes at grid operator level and the effective integration of storage into grid management mechanisms are also essential.


By strengthening these framework conditions, stationary energy storage systems can play a decisive role in stabilizing electricity networks, improving renewable integration, and supporting the long-term energy transition.
