Australia saw a sharp increase in battery energy storage installations in July, the first month of an expanded Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). More than 19,500 solar battery systems were approved during this period, marking a strong start for the national incentive program.
The July installations added an estimated 344.1 MWh of nominal capacity to the country’s distributed energy storage systems network. Under the rebate, introduced on 1 July 2025, eligible households can receive approximately 30% off the cost of a battery when installed with a new or existing rooftop solar system. The average battery size installed was 18.2 kWh, reflecting a growing preference for larger-capacity storage solutions.
The reported figures are based on applications where small-scale technology certificates (STCs) have already been issued or approved, meaning additional completed installations that are still being processed are not yet included in the official total.
With the rapid growth in solar batteries, a compliance inspection program has been rolled out to ensure all systems meet strict safety and performance standards. Authorities have stressed that as installation volumes rise, maintaining high-quality and safe installation practices is essential. Inspection results will be shared with state and territory regulators as well as accreditation bodies to guide future compliance and professional training programs.
From mid-August, postcode-level battery installation statistics will be published on a monthly basis, while more detailed historical records are available via the national Distributed Energy Resource Register. Officials have cautioned that the surge in demand may lead to temporary delays in processing STC applications and have encouraged applicants to plan accordingly.
The expanded rebate program is expected to play a pivotal role in Australia’s clean energy transition. By making battery energy storage systems more accessible, households can store surplus solar generation for use during peak demand periods or at night. This not only reduces pressure on the national electricity grid but also has the potential to lower energy bills in the long term.
