Many people think that the electrical battery does not need maintenance. Especially when using UPS power supply, more people think so. But in fact, the problems caused by the lack of maintenance of electrical batteries account for a very high proportion of all UPS lithium ion battery failures. Therefore, routine maintenance of UPS lithium ion battery will greatly extend the service life of storage battery of UPS power supply and reduce the failure rate. This article will analyze the maintenance methods of UPS lithium ion batteries for everyone.

1. UPS lithium ion battery should be used in a proper ambient temperature

Generally speaking, the major factor that affects the service life of electrical battery is the ambient temperature. Generally, the best ambient temperature required by battery manufacturers is between 20 to 25°C. Although the increase in temperature improves the discharge capacity of the electrical battery, the price paid is that the service life of the electrical battery is greatly shortened. According to experimental measurements, once the ambient temperature exceeds 25°C, the service life of electrical battery will be shortened by half for every 10°C increase. In addition, the increase of the ambient temperature will lead to the enhancement of the chemical activity inside the battery, resulting in a large amount of heat energy, which will in turn promote the increase of the ambient temperature. This vicious circle will accelerate the shortening of the service life of electrical battery.

2. Regularly charge and discharge the UPS lithium ion battery

(1) The float voltage and discharge voltage in the UPS power supply have been adjusted to the rated value at the factory, and the discharge current is increased with the increase of the load. The load should be adjusted reasonably during use, such as the number of electronic equipment used including the control microcomputer. Under normal circumstances, the load should not exceed 60% of the rated load of the UPS power supply. Within this range, the discharge current of the electrical battery will not be over-discharged.

(2) Because the UPS power supply is connected to the mains supply for a long time, the electrical battery will be in a floating charge state for a long time in an environment where the power supply quality is high and the mains supply failure is rare, and the activity of the chemical energy and electric energy conversion of the electrical battery will decrease over time, which accelerates the aging and shortens the service life. Therefore, in general, it should be completely discharged every 2 to 3 months, and the discharge time can be determined according to the capacity of the electrical battery and the size of the load. After a full-load discharge is completed, charge it for more than 8 hours according to regulations.

3. Use the communication function of UPS power supply

At present, most large and medium-sized UPS power supplies have operability such as communication with microcomputers and program control. Install the corresponding software on the microcomputer, connect the UPS power supply through the serial/parallel port, and run this program, you can use the microcomputer to communicate with the UPS power supply. Generally, it has functions such as information query, parameter setting, on-time setting, automatic shutdown and alarm. Through information query, you can obtain information such as mains input voltage, UPS power output voltage, load utilization, battery capacity utilization, internal temperature and mains frequency; through parameter settings, you can set the basic characteristics of UPS power supply, running time of electrical battery and warnings of battery running out, etc. Through these intelligent operations, it greatly facilitates the use and management of the UPS power supply and its storage battery.

4. Replace the damaged UPS power battery in time

At present, the number of storage batteries equipped in large and medium-sized UPS power supplies ranges from 3 to 80, or even more. These single electrical battery is connected by circuits to form a battery pack to meet the needs of the UPS power supply for DC power supply. In the continuous operation and use of UPS power supply, due to the difference in performance and quality, it is inevitable that the performance of individual battery will decline, and the storage capacity will be damaged and cannot meet the requirements. When some of the electrical batteries in the battery pack are damaged, the maintenance personnel should inspect each one to eliminate the damaged battery. When replacing new batteries, you should try to buy batteries of the same type from the same manufacturer. Mixed use of acid batteries, sealed batteries, and batteries of different specifications is prohibited.

This article gives four ways to extend the working life of UPS lithium ion batteries. In general, they can be summarized in four sentences: appropriate temperature, regular charging and discharging, good use of communication functions, and timely replacement of damaged battery. There are no complicated problems in the study of UPS power supply. As long as you pay attention to observation, you can summarize various characteristics and methods to facilitate our design.
